Friday Evening Actvity at Wastewater Treatment Plant

One of our readers has inquired about activity last evening at the Salmon Creek Wastewater Treatment plant. Apparently there were several fire trucks and police/sherrif cars there.

Lights Out!

UPDATE: Power Outage Affects 7,100 in Burien, King County. A fire associated with a power outage in Burien and unincorporated King County has increased the number of customers affected by the outage to about 7,100 homes and businesses.The fire is burning in a wooded utility right of way south of S 96th Street and west of Des Moines Memorial Drive. Power lines were reported on the ground in the area and at least one utility pole was burning.Seattle City Light deenergized the power lines to allow firefighters to put out the blaze. City Light crews were dispatched to restore service once the fire was extinguished.The cause of the outage was not immediately known. City Light expects to restore service to most of the affected customers by 5:30 p.m. by routing power around the damaged area. An estimate for full restoration of service will not be available until crews are able to inspect the damaged equipment.The general boundaries of the outage are SW Barton Street on the North, SW 167th Street on the South, Glendale Way S on the East and Puget Sound on the West. Seattle City Light is the ninth largest public electric utility in the United States. It has the lowest cost customer rates of any urban utility, providing reliable, renewable and environmentally responsible power to nearly 1 million Seattle area residents. City Light has been greenhouse gas neutral since 2005, the first electric utility in the nation to achieve that distinction.

Salmon Bake...BIG Success

For the first time since we moved here, (5 years ago), our family was able to attend the SOTS Salmon Bake. We found it to be a wonderful community event run by dedicated volunteers. The food was delicious! Some of you may have seen us, the bloggers, running around capturing the entire event on our recently purchased FLIP Video Camera. We were eager to post some of the video clips on the BLOG, especially of the hardworking crew on the BBQ! BUT....an unfortunate slip up on our part, (by not "saving" our footage), has left us without any to share. We are obviously not the pros on our camera that Joe and his gang are on the grill!

Thanks to all who made this event such a HUGE success!

Golden Pheasant Spotted in Shorewood

Thought I'd share photos of the Golden Pheasant that has been walking through our backyard the last few months. He walks between Seahurst Park and the Salmon Creek Ravine at the curve on 131st just past the Shorewood On The Sound sign. He's not shy. I've heard a few have been spotted in Seahurst Park over the years. Enjoy!

Explosive Incident

This morning, July 22nd, at about 2 AM an explosive was thrown over our fence onto our sports court, and came to our attention by a very loud boom. It happened as a car was simultaneously driving by. The explosion left a black burn mark on the pavement, and a large amount of it's debris was blown several feet in every direction. The police came to investigate, and took some of the debris to be analyzed. The Fire Dept. has also been notified of this most recent incident. If anyone noticed anything/anyone suspicious at this time, please notify us at sotsblogeditors@gmail.com

Witness Needed in Fire Investigation

A fire was started by fireworks tossed from a car at the corner of 28th Ave SW & Marine View Dr. This fire involved the dry, grassy area, and the fence, next to the shoulder of the road at the 11934 28th Ave SW residence.

Neighbor, Leonard Stevens was busy putting out the fire with a garden hose, when a woman walking a small, brown dog told him that she had the license number of the vehicle. The North Highline Fire District is investigating this incident, along with several other incidents in our neighborhood. ***We need the witness (female, walking a small brown dog) to call the license plate number in to the North Highline Fire District@ 243-0330, to aid in their investigation.

Car Vandalism

Last night our truck had the back window and front windshield smashed. Looks like another vehicle on Marine View drive had the rear window smashed.

We reported this to the Burien Police.

Fireworks Arson

On Thursday, July 9, at a little after 9AM, a 3-shell mortar was tossed into our shrubbery.There was a tremendous explosion, with three "bangs". The shrub ignited and generated a hot fire with lots of smoke until doused with the help of our neighbors.

Just prior to the explosion, a brown SUV driven by a young man, with at least two young male passengers,passed slowly by our house, turned around in a driveway, and stopped across the street from us. Another neighbor saw it speed away as the device exploded. We wanted to alert the neighborhood to this vehicle. According to the fire marshal, a vehicle of similar description has figured into two other incidents. One of them was in Shorewood where an explosive device was tossed into an unoccupied car.

Also, please know that your garden hose may not be enough to douse this type of fire.You will need a fire extinguisher and you will need to know how to use it.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to the neighbors who rushed to help us. Beulah and Bill Smith, Loren Milliman,Russ Galbreath and Steve Stangeland were right there, and were simply wonderful.
The arson is under investigation by the Burien/Normandy Park Fire Department. They are thorough,competent and thoughtful professionals and we feel confident that everything possibleis being done to find those responsible.

Traffic Meeting

A meeting was held Thursday July 2nd with SOTSCC and the 130th Street Group to discuss traffic issues throughout our joined neighborhoods. There were approximately 75 people in attendance and the meeting was at times very lively and informative with everyone having an opportunity to speak. Many good ideas were exchanged with the neighborhoods holding a vote and reaching a unanimous agreement that our neighborhoods will work together to get the City of Burien to implement the traffic calming ideas we discussed. Thank you to the many who took the time out of your busy schedules to join us and participate. This was a perfect example of democracy at work. I was proud our communities could come together for the mutual good.

Participants enjoyed excellent turnouts and a steady stream of sales.

Arbor Heights Swim Coach Inspired by Medley of Memories

Fast swimming, great team spirit, plenty of pizza, amazing coaching, and loads of fun are traditions for Arbor Heights Swim Team. S.O.T.S. resident Zac Hixson, who began swimming for "The Arb" at age 9, is now the Head Coach for the team he enjoys so much, he "could not ask for more out of summer". From training each swimmer for maximum speed, to losing his voice cheering at the meets, Zac's presence on deck is providing his swimmers with the same encouragement that kept him coming back year after year.

After outstanding success in both Summer League and High School swimming, Zac continues to swim at the college level. This fall the (Junior) Political Science major will return to Lewis and Clark College in Portland where he still enjoys swift competition in the pool. His main events are backstroke and the individual medley, and under the supervision of "the best and coolest coaches he's ever had", Zac continues to drop time in those events.

Keeping a sharp eye on the team from the Lifeguard chair is brother Lucas Hixson, also an Arbor Heights alumni, who just completed freshman year at Linfield College where he swam as well. Lucas excels in the 100 breaststroke and 50 freestyle, and holds the bragging rights to the faster 50 freestyle time in the Hixson boys' brotherly competition.

Not to be left out of the lanes, sister Anna Hixson, finishing her Sophomore year at JFK High School, is also on the team. Being coached by her big bro is "sometimes weird" but mostly fun! Anna adds another breaststroker to the Hixson trio of swimmers, whose parents John and Susan are always seen at the meets supporting the team.

Pictured above is Coach Zac passing on key advice on speedy racing starts to his 8/under swimmers. He also passes on the wisdom that Arbor Heights is one of the best places to grow up as a kid, and that friends from the Arb are best friends for life. He says the community just can't be beat, and with a coach like Zac, neither can the swim team.

Shorewood Beach Work Session

Hello Neighbors,

Our Shorewood beach property harbors invasive plants, so, with Board approval, I have scheduled a work session for 1:00PM this Saturday, June 13th. This will be to remove the Scot's Broom growing on the bank above the beach as well as to discourage Himalayan Blackberry and English Ivy that are smothering native plants trying to recover the hillside.

This timing does conflict with The Street of Garage Sales, so if you have planned to be selling rather than pulling, there is still the third Saturday work party at Shorewood Park at 10:00AM on June 20th. Last month volunteers moved half of the mulch delivered by City of Burien Parks department, so that pile needs to disappear into the park to be distributed around the new plants in the park. We have started work on the ivy along the NE border of the park as well.

It was with great delight that I discovered a Western Trumpet honeysuckle just about to bloom at the beach property! This is one of two native Northwest honeysuckles and has stunning orange flowers, so you can't miss it. June is it's month to blossom. We have been carefully stewarding a flourishing Western Trumpet honeysuckle in Shorewood Park after discovering it two years ago.

Please join your neighbors in helping to protect our local native plants along the coast and in the forest. Also, please forward this message to neighbors you know who might like to help.
